On May 20th, the first stage of the 18th China Xinjiang Tour around Sayram Lake (International) Road Cycling Race took place. The stage ran from Jinghe County to Alashankou City, with a total distance of 75 kilometers. The first 60 kilometers were flat, and the remaining 15 kilometers were a gentle uphill with a gradient of 1% – 2%. A dedicated sprint points area was set up at the 39 – kilometer mark during the race.
The wind was relatively strong on that day. In the first 20 kilometers of the race, the cyclists mainly focused on adjusting their states and adapting to the rhythm, and the main peloton was relatively stable. At the beginning of the race, Huang Guanghong from the Xidesheng Team and Xu Jiawei from the Sichuan Phoenix Fenice Team took the lead in making a breakaway. The two of them continued their breakaway all the way until they were near the sprint point at the 37 – kilometer mark, when they were successfully caught up by the large peloton behind.
After the sprint point, the pace on the track suddenly picked up. Although several riders tried to break away and attack alone during the race, they were quickly swallowed up by the main group. The decisive breakaway occurred when there were still 10 kilometers left to the finish line. Five riders, including WU Bohong from the Merida – Novatech Team, SHEN Junxin from the XDS Team, ULADZISLAU YARASH from the Fenice – Jichi Team, LUCHNIKOV EGOR from the CR – Grad Team, and MORA RAMIREZ LUIS GUILLERMO from the Jingchuang – Power Box – SEKA United Team, formed a super – strong breakaway group.
The five cyclists cooperated seamlessly, taking turns to lead the pack with a tight rhythm, firmly maintaining their leading edge. The large group behind them chased with all their might and only managed to catch up with the breakaway group about a hundred meters before the finish line. In the end, the breakaway group swept the podium of this stage. Wu Bohong won the stage championship, Shen Junxin took the second place, and ULADZISLAU YARASH secured the third place.
With his outstanding performance in this stage, Wu Bohong donned three honorary leader’s jerseys at once. He holds the yellow jersey representing the overall first place, the blue jersey for the stage champion, and the green jersey for the top of the sprint points standings, leading the points table of this year’s Tour of Qinghai Lake.
